an exploration into identity and what defines us as individuals

MyID – Its more than the money in my wallet

ItsMyID - so much more than a wallet or passport holderCash – sure it’s part of my identity, although the money in my wallet hardly amounts to a great deal.  I’m no Warren Buffet, and any thief that manages to lift my credit cards contained therein is in for a big surprise!  Skimmers beware – you’re not going to retire early on the proceeds.

But sadly, for many money does play a huge part in what defines us, along with our career and the social circles we move within.

Money sure can’t buy happiness; it can, however, rent it.

MyID – Its my contact lens holder!

ItsMyID - holderThis small piece of kit and I remain inseparable, although it has to be said that this amounts to something of a love/ hate relationship.  Let me explain…

As someone with less that 20:20 vision, (think Velma from Scooby Doo), I have the choice of wearing spectacles, contact lenses or bump into walls.  Playing sports with glasses on was not much fun in my teens, but when I discovered disposable lenses for the first time it was like an epiphany – I’d found freedom at last!

These days – if truth be told – I’d much rather be ‘contactless’, although I don’t seem to have the nerve to elect for laser eye-treatment technology just yet. Instead, I carry this little Perspex pot and cleaning solution around with me, (yes – it’s stored inside my Traveller holder for those that have already seen my other posts on this blog), so that I can safely store my lenses when not in use.  The person who invented this thing is an absolute genius – such a simple device, but one that guarantees the safety of my lenses when stored correctly.  I love it!

But I’d still rather be contactless… maybe one day?

MyID – Its my Traveller

ItsMyID TravellerWhat do you call it?  Me, well I call this useful bit of kit my ‘Traveller’ and it goes everywhere with me – my passport to the next adventure.  Does its two little wheels and crazy red fabric define my identity?  Well, some of my closest friends would seem to think so, as I’m constantly ribbed about taking my wheeled shopping trolley everywhere – even to weddings!  But the thing is that it’s so useful, convenient and a great place to keep all my ‘lady stuff’ secure.

Its my Traveller – and I wouldn’t trade it for anything!

What’s your ‘kitchen sink’, you know that item that absolutely has to travel with you, no matter where this might be.  I’d love to hear from anyone on this, so what are you waiting for – drop me a comment  ;)

MyID – Its more than shopping

MyID - Its more than a shopping trip to Earls CourtToo many people spend money they haven’t earned, to buy things they don’t want, to impress people they don’t like.  Someone gifted with great wisdom once said this; and folks I can assure you that it wasn’t me!

If you’ve just been dragged, (for me it would be ‘kicking’ and ‘screaming’), around some London or New York trade show – then you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about here.  There are shows for travel, ultimate destination holidays, business and security specialists – all of them dull, dull, dull…

I for one never find anything remotely interesting in such places.  Nope, I’m not interested in what Earls Court, or Olympia have to offer in February, March or June for that matter.  Nor am I bothered by cheap leather goods that are made in India for pennies, and then ‘branded’ for sale in Western countries for mega bucks!

Nope, I’m not interested at all – but hey, that’s just me.  Who goes shopping in these places?  Why go shopping at all?  Perhaps it has something to do with instant gratification, status anxiety and an endless quest for ‘the new’.  I’ve never understood this, but there’s no shortage of evidence to suggest that when women are depressed, they eat or go shopping…

…men on the other hand invade another country -  it’s a whole different way of thinking!

MyID – Its more than the annual summer break

ItsMyID - more than the annual holiday break or travel overseas MyID – Its more than those ten brief days that are spent every year with family and friends, but days that I wish would last just that little bit longer.  There’s no commuting through heavy traffic to worry about, nor the dull chitty-chat office politics and endless meetings that never seem to go anywhere.  On holiday, I examine who I am, where I want to be and what legacy I’d like to leave after I move onto a different realm.  Each year I resolve to make a change, to do things differently when I return home – and each year the memory loss hits me just as soon as that plane touches down on the airport runway safely.

Someone once said that the definition of madness is doing the same thing over and over again; but expecting different outcomes!

MyID – Its my dog Christine

ItsMyID Christine the family petWhere would I be without the companionship that Christine provides?  I’ll tell you where, nowhere – that’s where!  Christine is a big part of our lives and with her boundless energy and sense of fun, brings a ray of sunshine to even the gloomiest of days.   We love her so much that last year we took her with us on our first overseas holiday in ten years, sure Christine needed all manner of vacinations and even a dog passport – but it was worth it!

Horray for Christine the dog – a huge part of MyID.

MyID – Its more than a name on a passport

ItsMyID - so much more than a name on a passportItsMyID is an exploration into the soul – a journey towards discovering what makes us unique as individuals, through the objects we choose to bring into our lives.  MyID – it’s so much more than the name that appears on a passport or birth certificate, more than a social security number or the countless entries on national databases.  Please use this resource to catch a glimpse into my life, but hopefully you’ll want to share aspects of your own too!
